QuickStart Tournament
G.T.C. hosted its first quickstart tournament for 10-and-under kids. We had 15 young players sign up. The winner of the 10-and-under boys was Chad Mallory. Girls 10-and-under winner was Paige Russell. The girls winner of the 8 and under was Sophie Kestner. And the Girls 10-and-under champions in doubles were Nicole Baker and Sophie Kestner. Thanks to all pros (Russ Wormald, Dave Forman, Gregg Russell, and Ron Thomas) who volunteered at this event.
2008 Rookie Net Tournament
G.T.C will host two Rookie Net Non-Elimination Tournaments for unranked/novice players. This is a fun-filled and exciting tournament for unranked tennis players to test their skills in a tournament without worrying about being eliminated. The first is for Boys and Girls 12 and under divisions. It will be Aug. 10. The second is the Boys 14 and Girls 14 and under divisions. It will be held Aug 17,2008. Medals will be provided for the winners. Pizza will be provided at the events. If you have any questions, free feel to call Keith at 330 699-5028.
2008 Camps Results-Wow!
Thanks to all who attended Green Tennis Club camps this year. It was our best participation ever. Hope to see everyone back next year.
Why do tennis players check the ball before serving?
It relates to the fuzz on the balls. The fuzz on a new tennis ball tends to be smoothed flat, while a ball that's been used a couple of games will be more fluffy. The pros may check three balls before serving so that they can select one smooth ball and one fluffy ball.
The smoother ball is used for the first serve. Because the fuzz is flattened down, the ball travels faster than a used ball, which should make it harder to return. Should the first serve go out, the player will use the fluffier ball for their second serve. Although these move slower, they are easier to control and so the player is less likely to concede a double fault.
Meet the Topspins-Keith Ginnetti
In the last Net News, I talked about the lob topspin. The topspin lob shot is hit higher than the loop. It is hit about 12 to 16 feet above the net. It’s an offensive shot. The aim is to force the opponent into a weak return. It’s a great way to keep the net person guessing.
This month, I will talk about the angle topspin. Often the angle topspin can make an opponent run extremely wide to retrieve the shot; this will create an open court for greater opportunities for the players to rip a winner. The angle also is a great choice for the crosscourt passing shot. The two reasons to hit the angle are to take you opponent way off the court and when they come into the net for a crosscourt passing shot.
Cardio Tennis
Cardio Tennis will change back to Wednesday again in September. It will be still held at 6 to 7:30 p.m. It will still be offered on Saturdays from 8 to 9:30 a.m. The cost is only $ 15.00/person.
Prince in the House- Russ Wormald
G.T.C is happy to be able to offer Prince O3 racquets, strings, grips and shoes. Prince O3 technology has put the O3 Speedport Black (Bryan brothers’ choice) and O3 Speedport White in the top ten of racquets. The prince O3 Dura Pro Plus grip and Synthetic gut string are excellent products. Thinking of new shows look at Prince’s MC4 model. Prince addition to Head’s Line gives you great choices at G.T.C.
Prince sponsors Russ. If you have any questions feel free to ask him about this racquets.
Congratulations, Mark
Mark Dickerhoof, 11 (right), won the boys 12-and-under singles at Springside on July 8. He beat Noah Hendrickson 6-4, 6-4.
He also won the boys 12-and-under doubles with Joe Thomas at Canton City Tournament on July 24. Maybe we have the next Bryan brothers or Roger Federer on our hands.
Quote of the Month
